MY Story Island: Writing Our Worlds

Celebrating local culture and identity

The ‘Multicultural Youth (MY) Story Island: Writing Our Worlds’ project celebrates the contributions of young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. During 2021, the MYT Youth Advisory Group (YAG), MYT Peer Workers, and the Story Island Project worked with young people in the community, aged 10- 25 years, to support them to tell stories of hidden figures and promote understanding of Tasmania’s new and emerging multicultural communities.

A series of workshops were held to support and encourage multicultural youth to get creative and tell stories through poetry, video, drawing, collage and creative writing. The stories were diverse and showcased the big dreams, aspirations and strengths of the young people. The project concluded with a storytelling competition and a showcase of stories from the project, published in a book by the Story Island Project.

This project was funded by FRRR (Foundation For Rural & Regional Renewal) and supported by the Tasmanian Government.
